I have been with the same company for 20 years. I started at the bottom and through hard work and the will to learn and step forward at any opportunity, I became the director of operations.
Being promoted to director of operations means that I was now required to train others, make sure that they understand everything and how to use their training when needed.
When I took Missouri's CCW class for my own qualification, I was given the "NRA Basic Pistol Safety" handbook and the half inch thick Missouri statutes along with countless bits of information on Missouri laws. I was thinking, "How am I going to learn and remember all this in one day? How are all the other student in my class going to learn this?"
It was very difficult for me to understand all the legal verbiage written in the Missouri statutes (these statutes can not be changed or altered to be more understood in any way). My classmates felt the same, but asking questions in class, in front of others (like college) seemed too embarrassing and no one did it! Our instructor just read the statutes to us, asked us if we understood and we knotted our heads as if we did..... may as well of been in a another language.
Looking around the room, I saw other student starring out the window, wishing that the 8 hour class was over 15 minutes ago. That made me realize that I had to teach this class! From my previous training experience, I knew that I could make this class more interesting, more informative, more understood, more interactive with the students, and less expensive. I became obsessed!
The laws and regulations that our government created to protect me and my fellow countrymen were just about all I could think about. I studied the statutes, my college professor's teaching techniques, student's response that they were giving to certain lessons.... The list goes on and on....
During my obsession for research on this subject, I found that I was only given a fraction of what I could’ve learned in 10 hours of my CCW class. That was it! I went through the NRA instructor training course and became a NRA Certified Instructor for "Basic Pistol" and was given the Privilege to teach and certify several Missouri County Residents for their CCW.
Oh, I'm not through.....
When I learned that I already had most of the qualifications to certify the ENTIRE state of Kansas through the Kansas Attorney General's Office, I couldn't stop learning about their firearm laws. I soon became an approved by the state of Kansas and I've been giving our neighbors in Kansas, CCH classes ever since.
Was is worth all the effort and research? Nothing makes me happier then knowing that any student that walks through my door will the best trained of any CCW / CCW endorsement holder out there when they leave my classroom. Nothing makes me feel safer knowing that a properly trained endorsement holder is less likely to make mistakes in the laws and safe gun handling just because they took my class.
I love to teach and also get overwhelming gratification knowing that my students will have all of the necessary information, and more, to obtain and uphold their endorsement for their CCH / CCW.
